Research
Background
At American University, 40% of our students have experienced food insecurity during their time at college. In response, the community came together to fight hunger on campus through the creation of a food pantry called The Market--a secluded campus space where students can anonymously access free food and toiletry products. Our Goal: Improve the food pantry by addressing two key problems: first: the amount of time students waste visiting the pantry and leaving without the items they need and second: the barriers in communication between students and the pantry’s staff. |
Personas
As we outlined the features of our app, we created three fictional personas based on the students we interviewed during our research process. What we learned: Different users will have varying levels of time and commitment to the app. Someone like Greg the Grad Student is looking for a way to quickly check the pantry's inventory remotely, and doesn’t have time to stop by the pantry as easily as someone like Fiona the Freshman. |
User Flow
User Testing
Paper Prototyping
After developing our initial wireframes, we sat down with six people over the course of two days to walk through our app with a number of scenarios. What we learned: Our app needed to more clearly communicate its crowdsourcing functionality, and clarify that users cannot reserve food items using the basket feature. Solution: The key takeaway to many of the lessons we learned from user testing was to split our app into two different modes: one for when users are inside the food pantry, and another for one they are outside of it. |
